I would like to know if the cross fill option between 2 IFD540's can be set to manual both directions? Thank you for any help, Jim |

No (presuming I understand your question).
With dual IFDs, you can either turn CrossSync on or off. If it's on, it's automatically bi-directional. If it's off, there is no sharing of data between the IFDs.

So if I have the same flight plan in both, but different approaches in each one and I find out the approach I am assigned is in say #1, I can not manually copy it to #2. Is that correct? In my dual Garmin's that I have now, I can copy form #1 to #2 and visa versa, and was told that the Avidyne's could be configured the same way. I just want to make sure before I purchase the 540's.

Well we can't let CrossSync prevent a sale!
When you have CrossSync turned on, both IFDs share the exact same flight plan including approach so that example can't actually happen. However, you can have any number of pre-built or buildable flight plans on the Route tab. You can experiment with any flight plan on the Route tab including your two different approaches scenario. Then it's a breeze to make a route in the Route tab the active flight plan (which then replicates on the 2nd box automatically and nearly instantly).

So how hard is it to turn off the CrossSync and turn it back on? And with it off, can I have a different flight plan on each 540, and when it is turned back on, which plan would take preference?

It's moderately hard. Turning CrossSync on/off is done in Maintenance Mode which you can't get to inflight. Therefore, your specific question/scenario is not feasible.
However, folks do edit flight plans all the time via the Route tab. They play with what-if scenarios like you are talking about and they do this without altering the active flight plan in the FPL tab. The typical technique is they use and alter the "Current Route" in the Route tab with different routings or approaches and they can preview it on the map. They do all of this without affecting the actual active route until they make the conscious action to make the altered route, the new active route. And of course, in a dual IFD configuration with CrossSync turned on, that new active route gets shared between the two IFDs when you make it active on one of the IFDs.

OK, I give up. Editing and reviewing a flight plan before activating it seems like a really good idea. That's standard airline practice. But after playing with the Windows simulator and reading the manual I can find no way to edit the current route on the Route page, nor can I find any way to display the stored routes there on a map. If you select any route EXCEPT the current route and then press Enter, the route will be displayed for editing. But that doesn't work for the current route. And the Map tab that is shown on the Flight Plan page does not appear. The section starting at page 2-29 of the manual does not offer any enlightenment. Please tell us, how is this done? Thanks Mike |

You edit the currently active route directly, from the FMS page. With the quarter page split, you can view your proposed changes as you edit.
But, you could also COPY the entire current route into a memory slot (ROUTE page, COPY), and then edit that saved copy there without affecting your current navigation. When happy with the changes, you could then activate that new edited version of the route.

Yes, I understand all of that. But Jake's post seems to say that the Current Route can be edited and previewed on a map, then activated after it is confirmed to be OK. That's the part that seems particularly useful, and I don't see how it can be done.
Editing the route on the FMS page activates each small change as it's accomplished, and there's no Undo button to go back to what it was before you started. Using the Route page to copy and edit would work, but there's no map preview. And it seems sort of awkward. Mike |

Sorry, I had my own version of a Brian Williams moment. I mixed together current functionality with not-yet-released code I use in the lab and fly with in test aircraft. The certified code does NOT contain an ability to preview the route you are building/experimenting with on the Route tab.
You can easily build different scenario routes on the ground or in flight without affecting the active route now however. If it's the active route that you are trying to tweak for potential future use, then the steps are: 1. From the Route tab, ensure the cursor is around the magenta "Current Route" line. 2. Press the "Copy" LSK along the left side. This immediately copies the active route and opens it up in flight plan view mode. 3. For clarity, I recommend right then and there changing the name of the route so it's easily distinguishable. 4. Edit the route as you see fit. 5. If you then want to use these edits (replace the active route with this new route), press the "Activate Route" LSK along the left side.

So, we can expect that feature in an update in the future, then? * Orest Edited by oskrypuch - 05 Feb 2015 at 2:05pm |

This would be a very nice addition. Editing an active flight plan is not a good idea. It's too easy to screw things up. It would be much better to be able to enter and preview all the changes before accepting the update in its entirety. I hope you can make it happen. Thanks Mike |
