Has the 550 been approved as a secondary attitude display?  Specifically, can it be used as the backup display for an Aspen Pro?

The Aspen STC specifically requires a backup attitude indicator that runs off a different power source than the Aspen. That means a vacuum A/I or an electronic one that has a standby battery.

In most light aircraft installations the IFD550 runs off the same DC power source that the Aspen does. So it can't be an approved backup.

And, if that weren't enough, the IFD550 Flight Manual Supplement specifically says (Limitations - Page 11) that the 550 "may not be used for primary attitude information or standby attitude information." It may only be used as a secondary, non-required, attitude display.

So...   Nice try, but no cigar. Sorry about that.

Mike
