Just read a raft of coverage of the latest software update to big G's GTN series navigators. Looks like they've been feeling some pressure from Aspen and Avidyne, and have added features like displaying the name of the facility or navaid below the frequency on the radios, simplifying frequency entry (omitting the leading '1', etc), using a geographic database for simplified waypoint entry (although it still doesn't sound nearly as nice as the R9 workflow), and more.
They also announced very feature-rich 2-way wireless features between the GTN and iOS/Android versions of their app, including the ability to upload a flight plan to the GTN from the iPad, revise the plan on the GTN and send it back to the iPad (so they are in sync), send GPS position from the GTN to display ownship position on the iPad, and send datalink weather and traffic information from the certified avionics to the iPad. This latter set of functionality is the sort of stuff that Aspen's Connected Pilot is supposed to provide, except without the "you must buy everything from us" approach that Garmin takes. Avidyne was an early supporter of Connected Pilot, and I hope now that the certification of the IFDs is nearing completion that this functionality will get some serious attention. I have the Connected Pilot unit already installed in the aircraft and am expecting Avidyne to follow through on this.

I would also like to see connected panel work; I know it isn't in the initial 540 release.
If I knew it were on the horizon, it would affect what I buy for ADS-B. |
