Hi,
I recently updated my IFD540 to the latest software revision, and during the update, the shop told me 'something went wrong', and they replaced 'some part' with an Avidyne supplied module that fixed whatever issue they had. We then had several flights without incident, then i popped out the the other morning to update the chart database. It operated normally, took the chart update and rebooted, however, after the reboot, about 30 seconds in, I got a "unit overtemp return IFD for service. Operation unreliable.(1)" error. I had NOT been flying, it was 7am and maybe 75 deg F. After several power cycles, it continues to do the same. My shop said they were going to call Avidyne, but have had to remind them several times, and haven't gotten an update. Should I make a test flight and allow the unit to fully warm up to see if it resolves itself? Should I try updating databases again to see if it had a glitch in the update?

It's not going to resolve itself. There should have been an associated red alert. I spoke with Christine in tech support and she wondered if you maybe had a cooling duct to the IFD and it became disconnected? She says it's a good idea to have cooling specifically for the IFDs. Whatever the reason, the bottom line is that the unit got too hot.
I'm sorry to say that you're going to have to take it back to the shop and they'll have to RMA the unit. Have them call tech support to get everything arranged.

Thanks Steve -I've had it installed for 4 years without any cooling issues - I have reached out to the shop to have them pull it. Did Christine understand that this happened within 30 seconds of booting up the unit from cold?

Any chance that the over-temp event, actually occurred when it was in the shop?
The log file will clearly outline the date/time and events.

My guess is that it overtemped on the previous flight or at the shop. As Orest said, we'll be able to tell from the logs. Chris did read your post, but I think recommending cooling is SOP. You can always call her and discuss it further or have the shop call her. Given that you've had one running in your aircraft for 4 years, I'd say you're probably OK.

I talked about this with my avionics shop recently. The install manual suggests that external cooling may be beneficial, but absolutely does not "recommend" it. I could find something like three places in the manual where is specifically says external cooling is not required, and I think one place that says external cooling should be considered (if installation is in a tight avionics stack). If external cooling is truly recommended, then the install manual should be more clear in stating such.

SOP for Christine when she hears of an overtemp - better safe than sorry. Given that woody has had an IFD in his airplane for 4 years without external cooling, he's probably OK.
