I'm confused as to whether there is a currently available ADSB IN solution for the IFD's? I thought this was going to be from Freeflight Avionics, but apparently not? I have an AXP-340 so I'm not looking for an an all-in-one (IN and OUT) transponder solution.
Any definitive word as to current status? Thanks, Rolfe

Why wouldn't the Freeflight Rangr 978-RX series work?
EDIT: Although the name implies only single-band receive, the website description for the series says that dual-band receive is also available. The model number is FDL-978-RXD: However, that model number does not show up in the Freeflight store or on any other website I could find, so back to the drawing board. I have the same issue. I also have an AXP340 and would like a dual-band In solution to replace my MLB100.

I pulled my AXP-340 and went with a Garmin GTX-345 and couldn't be happier. I sold my AXP-340 and MLB-100 to help defray the cost.

I might end up doing that if I don’t hear of a good offering from Avidyne sometime soon. It would be either a GTX345 or a Lynx NGT-9000.
I kind of like my Avidyne panel and even wanted to replace my old audio panel with an AMX-240 (I know it is made by PS Engineering and there are more feature rich panels). I like the uniform look of all devices from the same company. I hope there is a dual-band solution that works with the AXP-340.

I also have the MLB 100. I'm just curious why you pulled it out and replaced it with another option. I've had no issues with mine so I wondering the benefit?

I can answer that question: dual band in. Having owned and flown airplanes with first the MLB100 (Skytrax) and now the NGT 9000, having the dual band in is very useful. No longer do I have to rely on the rebroadcast signal to see 1090 targets, and I still see all of the 978 weather and traffic.

Having used the MLB100 in my previous airplane, I especially appreciate the NGT 9000 in my current ride. I do miss, however, the AMX 240 from the previous airplane which I thought was very well designed and easy to use. My current PMA8000B lacks bluetooth, and doesn't have the simple yet functional interface of the AMX 240.

I put Aspens in and the MLB100 wouldn't talk to the Aspens, the GTX 345 will.

In my case, I want a dual-band solution because I see much more traffic using a dual-band receiver (Stratux), vs. the UAT-only MLB-100. Ocassionally the MLB-100 shows a plane not shown by Stratux, but Stratux always shows many more targets, all 1090ES.

The NGT 9000 also talks to the Aspen for weather and traffic.

If you dont mind me asking LANCE, what did you get for your AXP340 and MLB100 on the used market? I am considering pulling my AXP340 and MLB to go with a Lynx unit, and was wondering how much I could get for it help offset that cost of a LYNX.
I'll be getting an Aspen installed in a couple of months so I need something that can talk to it which is why I am thinking of the Lynx. |

I'm also wondering what you got. I don't have the MLB, but I'm tired of waiting for a dual band in receiver and might just give up my AXP for a GTX.

I got $2000 for the AXP340 and $1000 for the MLB100. I found a used GTX345 for $3000 and since i was in the middle of putting in the Aspens and had the panel torn apart. the shop charged me an extra $1000 labor. So by the time the dust settled the GTX345 cost me $1000. I already had a free Garmin ADS-B unlock for the Aspens.

I'll risk straying off topic a bit to mention this safety of flight issue, as I received an email today about the AD issued for Aspen ADS-B input problems |

That is an incredibly far-reaching AD. I'm surprised Aspen hasn't already solved the problem given how long it has apparently been known. I don't have any trouble showing weather and traffic on my Aspen 1000 PFD from the NGT 9000. Maybe it's a Garmin issue. ;-)

Reportedly ASPEN does have the fix finished, but can't get it through the last FAA hoop for a release, as government is shutdown.
The same data issue affected GTN units, but it has already been fixed in a firmware update. * Orest Edited by oskrypuch - 24 Jan 2019 at 1:10pm |

Am I wrong in assuming that the MLB 100 will show the 1090 ADS-B traffic also when within range of ADS-B coverage and the only time lacking dual band is an issue is when you are out of range of towers?

In practice, my MLB100 does not show all the traffic around me. For some reason, I see more planes using a dual-band Stratux receiver. Somehow it appears that not all 1090ES traffic is coming over the UAT transmission.
A dual-band receiver should also see at least some of the traffic if you fly outside the US, where UAT is not used.

Same here. My dual band Stratux will show me WAY more traffic than my Skytrax100 does, even if you ONLY consider traffic that is in my ADS-b "puck".
Which is why I really want a dual band in on my Avidyne setup.

This is my experience as well, though I have also seen targets on the IFD display that were not present on my EFB/Stratux display (may have been because of altitude filtering or other settings, though).

One thing that improved the amount of traffic I see on my IFD540 / MLB100 was to set my AXP340 to UAT In only so that the data sent to my by ground radar is all on UAT frequency. I learned that if you don't be specific on that in data stream, you can lose some traffic that you would otherwise get up linked to you. I still use my Stratus 2 though so I get as complete a picture of traffic as possible. I do wish for dual band on my MLB100.

Very strange! I would expect the towers to deliver both 978 and 1090 aircraft when in ADS-B coverage with the MLB 100. I’ve also seen all the extra traffic when using a Stratus but assumed it was due to the traffic filtering on the IFD/MLB 100. I don’t recall missing any “nearby” traffic with the MLB 100 when in coverage but perhaps I’ll have to look more closely.

In terms of TIS-R, your TXP informs ground how you are equipped in the air. If your TXP says you have UAT, you get 1090-R on 978, and vice versa. If your TXP is set to both, you get no ADS-R at all (because you are telling you have both direct receivers already).

My AXP-340 is properly set up to say there is only a UAT receiver, no 1090ES In. I verified the settings recently. Like MysticCobra, I’ve occasionally seen traffic on the IFD that is not shown on ForeFlight/Stratux, but mostly there is quite a bit of traffic missing on the IFD.
As to the puck, I notice the missing traffic more when there is a lot of traffic nearby. Even if my plane were set up wrong, I would think TIS-R would still include most traffic for those other planes flying near me.

Same here.. my AXP340 / Skytrax100 is setup correctly.
No 1090es in, but UAT receiver equipped. It's telling the ADS-b network I have only a 978 UAT receiver in my airplane. Heres the config for it: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ha6a6HZWtSixRXTc6 |

Is the missing nearby MLB100 traffic above your altitude? Could this be an issue of placement of the Stratux and MLB 100 antennas?

The MLB100 is only picking up UAT transmissions. It should be getting retransmission from the ground stations, not so much traffic above.
I find most planes transmit on 1090. UAT is more for the ground stations and the few planes that choose to not replace their old transponders and use add-on UAT transmitters.

I have the older MLB 100 with Nav Worx. That is single band 978 I believe. I had thought I should receive other 978 traffic from direct communication even when outside of tower range but I don't. Whenever I fly to the Bahamas, I get NO traffic at all displayed on my 540s even though I know, at times, there is 978 traffic in my area. When using the Stratus 2S with Foreflight, in the same location, I get both 978 and 1090 traffic. Is this correct behavior for the MLB 100 with NavWorx or do I have a setting wrong. It seems to pick up all traffic when in areas of rebroadcast.

Now if only Lynx had a remote version that I could stick back in the tail and use the IFD540 as the head unit.

Does the remote Lynx unit offer anything that the GTX-345 doesn't, out of interest? It seemed to me that the main selling point of the Lynx had been the screen! The cost looks good. I'd probably have gone for one if it had been available when I did my GTX-345.
Competition is good of course, even if there's no real differentiation in capability between the two. I assume the Lynx offers compatibility with a greater range of avionics than the Garmin.

Doesn't the GTX345 have AHRS, while the Lynx NGT9000 does not?
I like the new Garmin GTX375 as adual-band ADS0B transponder with AHRS and backup GPS navigation capabilities. It seems to be a better alternative than the NGT9000 for the price (although of course note remote). Hopefully it will be supported for traffic display on the IFDs.
