I have a new IFD440 and have a problem with it shutting down after being in the air for 1/2 half hour. I can get the unit to reboot after about 15 minutes but it will shut down in a few minutes. The avionics stack has a cooling fan. The unit gets pretty hot and I believe that that is the problem.
I can't get tech support to return my emails so it looks like I am on my own again. I have never had much luck with the Avidyne tech people. Has anyone else seen this problem?

The primary method to reach tech support, is to call the toll free number. That has always worked for me. You will need to look at the logs, to see what is going on, to be sure what is shutting it down.

Can you not get service after the sale from your avionics shop?

My question was, has anyone had an overheating problem?

The bezel gets hot, you'll see that a lot in the forums, but they don't overheat.  At least not as a design flaw, there have been reports here and there that usually end up with some installation issue.  We've been told that the bezel is designed to be a heat sink so it's supposed to get hot, mine certainly does, but I've never had mine overheat.

My 440 will actually shut down and will not reboot until it has cooled down.

If so, you can plainly see that in the IFD's logs.  In which case, something is blocking the IFD's cooling air supply, or the cooling fan is inop (or is not yet installed).

It matters how hot it got before it shutdown.  Sometimes, letting it cool off and then turn it back on is the proper action.  But if the temp of the box got high enough, it's not airworthy and should be placarded inop and/or sent back for repairs.

What you are seeing is definitely not normal, and certainly not usual.

You need to call Tech Support, and get the unit (or at least, first the logs) looked at. Let us know what they find out.
