    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 at 10:08am

Hello,

I have a G5 (stand Alone, non-certified) and an IFD 540 witj 10.2.3.1. I want to connect the G5 to the IFD via the RS232. I pined all cable and configure in the G5 “Garmin VHF NAV Radio” and in the IFD chan 5 under RS 232 “ctrlvhf”. When I start the IFD and the G5, no error occurs. The Garmin shows in low white letter "no vor". When I change at the IFD the Type of RS232, I get an error message at the G5 "no rs232", so the communication should be OK, the G% showa in the config menu as well a green mark left off “Garmin Nac Radio”.

Now my question, is there anyone, who has a config like me? IFD 440/540 with only one G5 and interconnected with RS232 and can use the HIS mode of the G5 and see the VOR selected in the IFD? Many thanks in advance.

Hi. I have a similar setup. I have 2 G5s configured as standby HSI's and driven by an IFD550. Here are the pinouts and respective settings.

Hello,

I did it that way. I pined it that way. IFD 540 connector P1050 RS232 5 Pin 60 and connect it direct to the G5 at Pin 4. GPS display on the G5 works now, but when I turn the VLOC/GPS button at the IFD, nothing change at the G5. It still shows “GPS” and the last course to the GPS-Fix. I have the IFD on the bench and not in the aircraft. I only receive GPS and no VOR in my office. Could that be the problem? I use the P1050 instead of you (P1001)? Is there a different between these two “RS232”?

Sorry, for me a little bit inexplicable. Could you explain that or does you G5 shows “GPS only” as well ?
Many thanks in advance

Good morning.

Actually, I have your inverse problem. Inside the hangar, I can't receive a GPS signal so I test using our localiser. Nonetheless, I'll have to confirm in the plane this weekend. But to be honest, I always file GPS.

As for P1001 vs. P1050, I don't think it makes a difference -- albeit, I was told to use serial port 5 if using P1050. I opted for P1001 to leave P1050 for future expansion (which I now use for my TWX670).

ATB.

Thanks a lot, I am not in a hurry. The G5 is still on the bench. I do not want to install the G5 "half ready". I think you'll understand. If I need a GAD29 to display LOC or GPS, I buy one, because I want install all G5 and GMU11 in "one time.

You will need the GAD29 to display the proper annunciations on your G5.

Here are some pictures for you. There are taken stationery on the ground. My G5's are connected to GPS antennas (GA35 each) and a GMU11, and wired directly to the IFD550 via serial ports.

This is because my G5's are backup instruments whereas my PFD/MFD are Dynon displays. My PFD/MFD are connected to a Dynon Arinc module (similar to the GAD29) which supplies the annunciations and flags. While my G5's aren't connected to the Arinc, it still shows course as in the pictures; however, without the Arinc connection, the indicators remain GPS and VFR on the G5.

This shows the IFD550 tracking to a navaid (V-LOC).

This is the corresponding G5 display for the course selection.

Hello,
many, many thanks for the pictures and your time and help. So I did not made a mistake, the RS232 just send the GPS CDI. I will buy a GAD 29.
By the way, you made a nice Cockpit. Mine is far away from that nice one you have. My old Twinco (1971) has the standard layout of that time with an King HSI KI 825 (shows no GS on RNAV) and a IFD 540 and an old GNS430.
Once again, you helped me really!
