Is it possible to boost the transmit power of the 440? My old Collins radio gets ground stations before the 440 can.

Thanks

That's a good question-- the Avidyne web site doesn't seem to make mention of the 16W upgrade (which is really just a software unlock) for the IFD 5xx any longer, although I think it used to (along with the unlock for the SAR features). Sarasota sells the IFD 5xx unlock for an eye-popping $4389.00; if you search for "Avidyne 16W VHF Activation" you'll find a few other vendors but all list it as only working with the IFD 5xx series. I'm going to tentatively conclude two things from this:

  1. You can't get the unlock for an IFD 440
  2. Pricing a software unlock at 1/3 the price of the entire unit is absolutely bonkerdoodles.

wow that is a punchy price. I was noticing today that i have an antenna on top and one on the bottom of the plane. Perhaps the 440 com goes to the aerial that is less ideal for long distance. Has anyone managed to boost the power?

Where is the 440 wired to?

You want your "main" radio wired to the belly antenna, and use the secondary radio (top antenna) for ground ops.

If the antennas and wiring is good, you should have no trouble with 10W in normal ops.
