It has just come to my attention that the IFD-540 cannot be used to turn on some (maybe all?) runway lighting. Apparently there is a relatively slow ramp-up in transmitter power when the mike is keyed and runway lighting systems need a sharp transmit edge. I have also noticed this when transmitting voice. You need to pause very slightly after keying the mike before speaking otherwise the ramp-up will clip the first syllable. I can live with this latter issue but not being able to key runway lighting is a pretty big issue. Have others noticed this and is there a hardware or software fix in the works to deal with this?

Should be fixed shortly in 10.1.1.0

Thanks. I was afraid it was going to have to be a hardware fix. -Jim |

I have been testing 10.1.1.0 for awhile now and I can confirm that the Comm issue you speak of has been resolved at least for the issues I was having with SuperAWOS and PCL. I updated only one of my IFDs so I could compare the two and consistently my #1 (10.1.0.0) fails to work reliably and my #2 (10.1.1.0) works reliably.

Sometimes it will work if you wait a second or so between clicks. I was flying this evening and got the lights to turn on once but not the second time. Luckily the line guy heard me trying and turned them on with his handheld. It's pretty unnerving the first time you realize you cant get them switched!

The PCL will work if you don't try to rush through the mic clicks. A steady deliberate push release push release works best. It was the SuperAWOS I had the most difficulty with. They have a more sensitive trigger that requires a faster cycling of the mic which is at odds with the speed of the IFD540. 10.1.1.0 resolves this satisfactorily.

That's the problem I had turning the lights on at MGJ on Sunday night, had to go around. Any idea about the ETA on the update?

Predicting a software release, that has to be approved by the FAA, is a fool's gambit. That said, this is due out in 10.1.1, which reportedly is due out real soon. * Orest |

for you guys that have it working is it better to leave each push longer or leave the wait between pushes longer? I thought I had it figured out until last night.

A little of both. About one second total per click, evenly divided between button up and button down, triggers the SuperAWOS at my home field very reliably. |

From what I've heard, most pilots try to get five clicks in less than two seconds. Most runway light systems give you more than three times that allowance to get your clicks in (five clicks in seven seconds, I think). Slow click, small pause works just fine. |

Actually, the standard window is 5 seconds. We have a standard L-854 radio controller at our field, and we have 3 levels of intensity: 3, 5, or 7 clicks within 5 seconds selects either low, med, or high.
I can "click,click,click..." really fast with my KX-175B, but with the IFD-540, I must make deliberate clicks, with deliberate pauses. At times, I miss the 5-second window. It's a PITA, but it does work. It sucks that my new fangled box isn't as agile as my KX-175B. Oh well... hopefully they'll improve it with version 10.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1

10.1.1.0 makes this WAY better. We're trying to birth this release right now. Maybe a week. Maybe two or three.

What about the slow ramp-up when transmitting voice? Will that also be sped up in 10.1.1.0? |
