I hesitate to ask this, for fear that it has been answered previously or that it is somehow painfully obvious, but here it goes....

What are the two holes that I have shown circled in red and yellow near the bottom of the front panel for?

The one on the left (circled in red) sure looks like a camera.  I thought the other one was a photocell, but the ambient light sensor is in the upper right.

Unused functionality for potential use in the future.   At this point, they do nothing.

Hmmmm.....  I wonder what surprises Avidyne has in the works?

I swear that one on the left looks like a camera!  I might put a piece of tape over it, just in case

From looking at what is stored in the IFD540 files,  it is almost a black box

The holes could be used with a tiny microphone for voice recognition commands ( change frequency,
direct to, mayday 121.5.   Maybe IR transducer for a handheld remote control?

I've figured it out:

The IFD-540 is actually running off of an iPhone platform - hence the nice pinch-zoom touchscreen.  The hole on the left is the iPhone camera, and the hole on the right is the flash for that camera.  These will be used for a new surprise feature to be announced sometime next year called "Aero Selfie"

Okay, I'm up waaaaay too late...
