Question for Avidyne:
Will the IFDs display traffic and weather from either of the Garmin ADS-B units (GDL-90 or GDL-88)? |

Yes, we're adding support for GDL-88 as part of Release 10.2. That will allow the IFD to be the position source for the GDL-88 and the IFD will display GDL-88 supplied ADS-B traffic and weather.
I can't remember how a GDL-90 is different from a -88 signal-wise so I can't answer that off the top of my head at this point. |

I think the GDL-90 has pretty much been phased out. It was the first UAT. It used the GDL 90 protocol (i.e. - Capstone), but I'm pretty sure Garmin went with a proprietary protocol on the GDL 88. I assume y'all reverse-engineered it for 10.2?

Oh yeah. We support the GDL-90 version of "Capstone Protocol" in 10.2 also.
Garmin was kind enough to supply the ICD for the GDL-88 so there was no reverse engineering required. It works great in the lab on our test units.

Another interconnectivity question, more about the MLB than the IFD. Many of us have Aspen PFDs/MFDs (in part because of anticipation of DFC90), now don't have DFC90s but do have IFDs/MLBs etc., and have the Aspens. The MLB plays on the IFD, but would be nice to port MLB-output weather to the Aspen MFD. Aspen "thinks" the NavWorx box plays on the MFD (with an unlock fee), but has not tested the MLB. I would be ok paying the unlock if there is a reasonable expectation that the MLB weather output would play on the Aspen. Speculation? Has it been tried? |

No speculation here. Hasn't been tried by us (we don't have an Aspen MFD, just PFDs). We're quite happy loaning an MLB to see if they have success. I'll chase that down.

I know of at least one guy that would go ahead with the MLB100 now were a generous trade-up allowance also to be pre-ordained when said MLB*** becomes market reality. (I can't help it; I'm a Scot.) |
