Just thought I'd toss this out here in case anyone else gets confused by it, and in hopes that it's yet another bug that can be patched in 10.2.1...
I was preparing for departure from KAVL, and had loaded/activated a simple flight plan of KAVL BZM KTTA. Then clearance gave me the Asheville 5 SID, so I tried to add it to my origin of KAVL in the FMS route screen. The IFD let me, and it inserted the appropriate legs, but my leg to BZM was still highlighted in magenta (active). There was no way to go back and activate the first leg of the SID. The only way I got this to work was to remove the whole flight plan and start over, adding the SID before adding any fixes beyond it.

The solution is to not activate your flight plan. The IFD will do that automatically on takeoff. If the flight plan has not been activated, there will not be an active leg. It should accept the SID entry. David |

The solution is to not write software that has some legs able to be activated and other legs not able to be activated.

I was trying to offer a solution to the pilot. |

I respectfully don't consider that a solution. I want to have my flight plan active, and have reviewed its guidance for the current and next legs before I take off (especially into IMC). I hate the feeling of noticing/debugging something abnormal during a critical phase of flight.

The FMS will not allow a leg to be activated if it cannot be sure that it will provide guidance to the intended path. The only two legs in the Asheville5 SID are heading-to-altitude and heading-to-manual-termination legs. Those legs have neither a defined starting point nor a defined end point, in terms of lat/lon. If you were to activate the first leg and be anywhere except on the intended runway, the FMS would simply guide the aircraft to the specific heading, which would not be the path intended by the published procedure. Therefore, we don't allow you to activate those particular kinds of legs that are dynamic in nature. We would rather provide *no* guidance than to provide *incorrect* guidance. |

Shouldn't the IFD put up an advisory stating as such?

There is a section in the pilot guide that covers this. Section 5-4 (Navigation) IFD540 Rev 04 PG
