The Avi booth at Oshkosh this year will have a 4-sided center pedestal that showcases some neat installation options. Included in that pedestal will be:
1. A real Cessna 172 panel with an IFD550 in the stack driving a landscape mounted IFD100 on an iPad Air that is mounted over the traditional 6-pack. The iPad mount has no back to it so you can leave your instrument panel untouched, mount the bracket and pop your iPad in/out as you see fit. That gives you a really affordable glass upgrade to your legacy panel. 2. A forward fit panel with two rear-mounted iPad mounts in the traditional PFD and MFD locations, both being driven over WiFi by a single IFD550. 3. A IFD440 driving a 12" iPad Pro for truly giant glass. 4. A RV panel showcasing the increased SkyView-IFD integration upgrades we've just completed. Probably worth checking out if you're near Hangar C.

Sounds intriguing, do you have any pictures for those who won't make it to OSH this year?

I'll take and post some on Monday, if Simpson doesn't beat me to the punch.

The red-X's in the top two pix are because the IFD550 in the booth didn't have power being applied to the VHF connector, so the VHF freqs weren't being transmitted over WiFi.
Avidyne and Dynon/Advanced Flight Systems both updated our software to increase the integration between the two sets of boxes - for example you can tune the com/nav freqs on the IFD from the Dynon/Advanced Flight Systems boxes now. The 12" iPad Pro in the bottom show was configured to think it was talking to an IFD410 (the no-VHF version of the IFD440) so that's why no comm freqs are showing up in the top left corner of the iPad in that last shot.

If you cover up your six pack which I'll call ai,hsi, asi,tc,altimeter and vsi will the ifd 100/ifd550 relay all that info? From the ifd 550 proposed pilot's manuel,it could easily replace the hsi and ai. But what about the pitot-static info. You could get gps altitude/or gps above ground altitude and vsr instead of vsi. Would you use gps groundspeed? If you have an aspen 1000 could the ifd's recieve and display all the pitot static info? Thanks

For Release 10.2, if the IFD550 has access to air data (e.g. from an Aspen PFD, or Garmin G500, or air data computer, etc), then it passes that air data along to the IFD100 which will display airspeed and altitude tapes.
Post Release 10.2, we'll likely add those tapes to the panel mount IFD as well.

Steve, will the airspeed tapes be configurable to match the various arcs of the airplane in use?

Eventually.
We're running out of time to have a means to do that as part of Rel 10.2 but the good news is that since this is only the IFD100 app we're talking about, we'll be in a position to add that quickly post initial release of the app.

Speaking of GPS Altitude, I am at a loss to find this anywhere in the 540... (just AGL and Minimum Safe Alt - and of course derived from iPad GPS apps).
Can someone direct me to where this data can be displayed in the IFDx40's? Tom Wolf

On IFD: AUX - Setup Tab - Datablock Setup.
Also, IFD440 Pilots guide pg 4-16 (complete with picture showing GPS AGL altitude in top right datablock). Very nice! Sorry I can't point you to exact page in IFD540 manual, but in IFD440 manual the exact page is in the table of contents: AUX Pages - Setup Tab - Datablock setup.

I believe Tom is looking for straight GPS altitude, not GPS AGL Altitude.

Steve, I realize that the IFD100 driven by, say, an IFD540 won't show AH, but would it too be able to display speed and altitude tapes if air data were available, or will this be restricted to IFD550 as source?

AviJake,
Is there a response to Tom for GPS Altitude? I would further like to see this recorded in flight log. |

GPS altitude is recorded in the Systems datalog.

So, I gather there is no display of GPS MSL altitude available in the 540, just AGL.

AviSimpson,
It appears there is not a one to one update rate between the two logs. Looking at the system log that I have access to, I see gaps of several seconds mid flight. What is the criteria for writing a record to the system log? Can GPS altitude MSL be written to flight log as an enhancement? Jeff Edited by ac11 - 03 Oct 2016 at 2:12pm |

The short answer is the criteria varies depending on the data point.
I'll add the request to the list to see what effort it would take to move the GPS MSL to the flight log.

Thanks for the reply AviSimpson. I think this is the first GPS I've come across that didn't have GPS MSL altitude readily available. Having it in the flight log will be a nice improvement, and a data block would be great too. Thanks.
