Dear all,
Depending, I need, or not, to activate the approach. The option is not always activated and the approach is often active by default when it is loaded. Could you help me to better understand the logic? Thank you! Dominique

Dominique:
I prefer not to activate the approach. I prefer to load it, review it, and then proceed direct to an initial approach fix. When the approach is activated, the IFD will immediately proceed direct to one of the fixes. I would rather get the entire approach loaded, review it carefully, and then manually pick the fix that I want to proceed directly to. I don't like to assume that I know what the IFD will do next; I'd prefer to tell it specifically what I want it to do. Vectors-to-final approaches are a little different. With those you have to load the approach, review it, and then activate the vectors-to-final leg. This is just my personal preference. You will probably have your own preferences. The important thing is to adopt your own procedures, understand them well, and use them every time. Shooting approaches in bad weather is no time to be wondering "what's it doing now?" The simulator is a very good way to practice and get familiar with the IFD before you go out flying. You are wise to be using it. Hope this helps. Mike |

Also keep in mind, that "activating" the approach won't necessarily direct you to a waypoint on the approach. If you still have waypoints to go, you will continue along until you reach it.
I also prefer to just load and then positively select a waypoint to go to, or 5o amend the enroute segment as per the updated clearance. * Orest Edited by oskrypuch - 29 Apr 2018 at 11:11am |

Thank you for your recommendations. I confirm that the simulator is a great tool!
What I still do not understand is why, in some conditions, I see the option to activate the approach, and some others not (The Avidyne logic is very different from the Garmin)... In the real life, I am mostly only using VTF, as despite we have hundred of STAR published here, they are always vectoring us for the arrivals in Germany... Dominique

With Avidyne, you create a flight plan, and then keep modifying it as required, to add an arrival/approach, etc., but that plan is always "active", so yes the logic is different.
In direct answer to your question, I don't know, I don't often use the activate approach button, I just load the approach at some time, and then transition to the correct waypoint when so cleared. Loading an approach is so quick and easy, I will usually NOT load an approach until I am quite certain what to expect. * Orest |

I do the same.
The whole "activate" thing is largely irrelevant, except for vectors-to-final. It's far less confusing to simply load the approach and then go to whatever waypoint you want.

Thanks to all! Very clear, I have been somehow contaminated by many years of Garmin 430 logic...

You have to be on the FMS tab to activate the approach. If you're on the MAP tab, you wont get the option. Hope that helps.
