Let's say we are flying PVD to BED direct. We enter:
KPVD KBED and start to fly. KBED is the active waypoint. We now want to add a PROC for KBED. BUT if you add an approach, the KBED waypoint gets duplicated below, and the approach tacked on to it. I understand that the issue is that the active waypoint is the original KBED entry, but it would seem more logical to leave it active, and then insert the procedure BEFORE it, rather than duplicating it and adding the procedure below. Maybe not, but I mention it. * Orest |

I thought that was odd myself. I initially second guessed skipping below the destination airport to "direct to" the initial fix of the approach.

Steve,
You might wish to add a "Tip" box on this too, so folks aren't confused about an approach being added below the airport waypoint where you were specifying an approach, together with a duplicate of that airport -- when the said airport is the active waypoint. * Orest Edited by oskrypuch - 22 Apr 2014 at 11:20pm |

I didn't realize what you were pointing out until I ran into today with the sim, it definitely doesn't seem intuitive. Originally I was thinking that you'd want to add the approach ahead of the airport leaving the airport as the active waypoint (don't auto switch guidance while building the flight plan) and then you can manually select direct to the IAF, but that would require you scrolling back up through the approach. The way it is now, you just have to manually select direct to the next waypoint in the flight plan. I agree that a tip box is the correct way to handle this.

Yes, it is definitely easier to switch to one of the initial waypoints in the approach, they are right there instead of off screen and above.
But selecting activate approach should do it too. In any case, a tip box in the docs should take care of this. * Orest |

I discovered this today also. What's the right thing to do? I was executing the missed at KSEE, and after MZB, selected "Direct to" an alternate (KCRQ), then selected the procedure. Ooops. I think I deleted the now-extraneous first airport waypoint when I was trying to figure out what happened, and the result was not simply a direct-to from my current location to the new IAF - I think it showed a route from KSEE (original destination) to the IAF. I'll have to try this again.
Sounds like what I should have done was after loading the approach simply select the IAF after the airport and "Direct to". Is this correct? |

I haven't flown with the garmin 430/530, but I'm reading on the CPA forum that:
"Many people misunderstand the difference between Loading an approach and Activating an approach. Loading will add the procedure to the end of the flight plan. Activating will add the procedure to the end of the flight plan and make the IAF a Direct To. There is NO OTHER DIFFERENCE." I went back in my example and selected the destination airport, selected the approach, then there was an "activate" key on the left. That key made the flight plan go direct to the IAF. That is probably the "correct" way to do it (but does the same thing as simply selecting the IAF after the airport and going direct to).
