I have a TAS620 that was upgraded to the /A version and displays traffic on the IFD. However, when the IFD is connected to Foreflight, traffic (nor weather from GDL69) shows up. I asked both Foreflight and Avidyne at Oshkosh about it, and no one has any answers as to why.
AviSteve, can you help me?

So you have a TAS620/A and a GDL69, both connected to the same IFD. The IFD displays both weather and traffic. So then you connect Foreflight to the IFD. Are you saying: 1. the IFD stops displaying traffic and weather or 2. the IFD continues displaying traffic and weather but on Foreflight you see neither traffic nor weather

Hi Steve, thank you for looking at this.
The IFD always displays the Sirius XM weather and TAS/A traffic. Foreflight displays neither, although I can transmit flight plans back and forth so I know it is connected.

I think Foreflight only knows how to speak ADS-B Capstone protocol (you'd have to double check with them to be sure). So I wouldn't expect FF to display anything from the GDL69 because it doesn't use Capstone protocol. You can configure the TAS to communicate with either Capstone or TCAD protocol. If it's configured for TCAD, then I wouldn't expect traffic to show up on FF.

A quick Google search reveals that the GDL69a works with Garmin Pilot, but not ForeFlight. Presumably this is because Garmin found it easier to support the XM proprietary interface in their tablet client, while ForeFlight supports other Connext technology, which is Garmin’s primary proprietary format.
With the success of ADS-B based services, it seems unlikely that future support for yet another vendor specific format is likely from Boeing. Perhaps it’s time to consider getting an ADS-B In based solution, and avoiding the XM fees? |
