I posted a detailed pirep already, but I've had some more hours of use now, and I am more and more enthralled. I just have to say that the IFD540 is one incredible unit, fast, easy to use, and powerful. It is a big step forward in GPS/COM/NAV units, and it is only going to get better!
Yes, it was worth the wait. In fact, I would now be very ticked off and disappointed, if I had gone with a rather less capable competitor's product, just because it happened to be available earlier.

Totally agree. I find myself getting so excited when I know I have a flight coming up.

I was thinking the exact same thing on my flight Saturday to and from Maine. These things are fabulous and like you said, can only get better.

I have seen mine on a shelf and touched the buttons, but have yet to see it operate outside the sim mode. The AXP340 and AMX240 that are required before the panel work can be completed are supposedly on a truck to me as of today, so I'm hoping that I too will know the joy of flying behind a shiny new Avidyne stack shortly after the new year arrives!

My shop, VIP avionics, before installing my unit, set it up on a bench for me to sit and play. They hooked up an external antennae and allowed me to learn the details of this incredible devise without flying. I spent hours just pushing the buttons, flight planning, and being comfortable. I highly recomend this as it's more realistic than the app simulator . In the northeast, VIP is #1.

I borrowed a GPU from our avionics shop, for now. I also ordered a unit (Bycan PS-1450AP) for myself, for the longer term. I expect that there will be many new changes that I will want to sit and play with, on the ground. It is also handy for database and firmware updates.
