I have a bill from my IFD installer for freight for the printed pilot guides - $148. They were sent separately from the IFDs, and I'm not even sure I want them, and could certainly have printed a copy myself for less than that. If the printed version is absolutely necessary why couldn't it have been sent with the units thus saving freight? Or maybe it wouldn't have - the freight bill for the IFDs was $648, which is about double what I paid to ship my 430s back to the US when I sold them.

Grumble mode off - I do like the 440s - if the GPS dropouts can be fixed I'll love them.

I believe it is an issue with your installer. When I had my Avidyne panel installed including the IFD540, the avionics shop provided the printed guides that came with the units at no additional charge.

There are at least five hardware mods related to GPS signal improvements. There is now a maintenance page where they are all listed. If you don't have all of them up to date, that could be contributing.

In any case, you should give tech support a call (or email), and send them your logs. They will have an answer for you fairly quickly.

Have any of those hardware mods been implemented in the last three months? If not, I have them all. Where do I find the maintenance page you mention? I have sent logs to tech support, no response since.

Clyde, I know that the IFD's are supposed to work with the original Garmin GPS antennas (if that's what you have). For whatever reason, mine didn't and the avionics shop replaced it with a new Comant GPS antennas. You might want to contact Dave at NexAir Avionics and see if that's a common issue or not.

Not sure on the dates. There may be more out now.

I saw the listing on one of the maintenance pages, with firmware 10.1 I believe. Can't recall which one, but there are only 12 or so to flip through. A number of ways to get to the maintenance pages, easiest is to just boot up the unit with a USB stick inserted.

That is only the case if the original antennas were WAAS GPS antennas, in which case they should function with the new units.  If the Garmin antennas were for non-WAAS units, they must be replaced.

No, it was a Garmin WAAS GPS antenna (GDL69A I think) that wouldn't work with my IFD. I don't know if this is a common occurrence or not but it did happen at least once!

A GDL69A is an XM receiver, not GPS.

My installer used a Garmin GA35 WAAS antenna with my IFD-540.  (My old GPS antenna was non-WAAS).

A bit off the subject for this list, but may I suggest a look at the Sensor Systems S67-1575-273 GPS antenna?

It protudes less than 3/16ths of an inch above the top of the fusl*ge. Almost no drag at all, yet works great.

Definitely approved for the IFD-540.
