I was discussing an upcoming panel redo with a vendor well versed in Garmin products, but having only installed one Avidyne IFD540 (mine last year). In discussing the EFIS G500/G600, he was unsure of the paperwork allowing the IFD540 to supply the WAAS information to the G500/G600.

The search function shows me at least 3 (?) owners here have a G500/G600; do you have any insight applicable to this?

Thank you and happy Easter weekend,

Louise

I imagine that would depend on the approval basis for the EFIS.  If the EFIS provider was smart, he certified it using a positions source referenced by a specification (such as requiring a GPS certified to a specific TSO).

The other option is that the EFIS requires a specific GPS unit (a particular manufacturer's model of GPS).

So what does the EFIS STC say?

I think he said the Garmin G500/G600 lists the GTN 750, GTN650, GNS530, GNS430 and GNS 480 and was unsure, since the Avidyne IFD540 is plug and play, if any previous installs have met the requirement (and so I am asking here).

Here is the info at the website:
GPS Source Garmin 400W/500W Series
GNS 480
GTN 6XX/7XX

Do I need to *possibly* slip the 530W back in for the G500 install, then remove and slide in the IFD540?

No, our installation manual says that it can be used with a G500/600.

There seems to be a lot of confusion out in the world regarding this. It is the same thing as a Cirrus or Piper owner with the Entegra package installing anything other than GNS430. Our STC does not call out anything other than those yet, it is still a legal installation.
