Avidyne has now come out with its own ADS-B transponder. But a good number of us that upgraded to the R9 suite have a Becker transponder; some with Mode S capability.
Will there be a way to make the Becker ADS-B compatible? If so, how will that be done? If not, is there a remote transponder option for R9 folks?

There will be a way to upgrade your R9 system for full ADS-B Out compliance for the 2020 mandate in the US, and international mandates elsewhere.  While Becker has not announced any rule-compliant ADS-B changes to their Mode-S transponder, I would expect them to offer an upgrade to Version 2 1090ES ADS-B Out at some point in the future.

Avidyne is also investigating other transponder options for the R9 systems, starting with the recently-released panel-mount AXP340 1090ES ADS-B Out Mode-S transponder.

The WAAS GPS in the R9 system should be adequate for the ADS-B Out position source, so R9 customers are already set for that portion of ADS-B Out.

Given the R9 setup and the panel space, it seems the ideal transponder for R9 is a remote one given the buttons are already on the keypad.

Anything new on this front?  And, what about a 406 ELT connection?

Nothing new on this front that we are ready to talk about.

On the 406ELT question, do you ask with respect to basic R9 support or with respect to ADS-B transponder support/integration?

I started with the 406 having support from R9, but the ADS-B issue is also a consideration.  Basically, I would like a 406 that receives it's data from the R9.  Can the ADS-B be part of that solution?

I started this discussion back in 2009 and here we are in mid 2016. What is the current status of any Becker mode S conversion to ADS-B compatibility with R9. After all of these years there surely should be an answer by now?
Thanks!

No, there is not an answer on that question right now.  We're in active discussions with Becker right now about the ADS-B upgrade path.  No resolution at this time (but it's an internal thread we are not letting die).
