So the ever-helpful folks at Sarasota Avionics are claiming that FreeFlight is claiming[1] that their RANGR units can display traffic and FIS-B weather on a 540. That was news indeed to me. Did I miss a memo?

[1] see what I did there?

It is my understanding that the FreeFlight system is fully certified at this time and is fully compatible with the IFD-540.  Why wouldn't it be able to display traffic and weather on the 540?  What am I missing?

Oh, I know!!  I'm still missing the 540 itself!!

We have made no announcements regarding support of the FreeFlight system and the IFD540.  We can not vouch for the compatibility between the two.

All of the transceivers (Navworx or Freefight) claim that TIS displays on 430,530, Aspen, etc. <There is no mention of the 540 device in any of their discussions>. It SHOULD via Capstone be able to display FIS-B, but while Avidyne has committed to Capstone (as has Aspen), neither have implemented Capstone.

Result= TIS yes, FIS no, or so I understand it.

Jake?

Wow! The Avidyne sales rep at Oshkosh told me to just go with FreeFlight.  He IMPLIED that I could go with FreeFlight and get both traffic and weather on the 540.  He literally pointed me in the direction of the FreeFlight booth.

This is all very frustrating.

That wasn't the smartest of things for that rep to say BUT...... don't worry, it will all work out fine.   Seriously.

Let us know when/if you have to really make a move (if still relevant).
