Got my aircraft out of the shop today after an extensive annual.
During the process my IFD540 was exchanged under warranty.  In another post I asked about config issues and SVS issues.  Got a file today and this is all sorted.
The issue today is this.
First flight after annual, always a little "pucker" on the roll.  On climb out I was directed to route around the Bravo airspace here near Calgary.  A route I have flown dozens of times.  As I was making the 180 turn from 35 heading south to the fix I rubber banded the line to the spot.  I released the line and hit enter.  The screen went blank.  I quickly switched my audio panel to the 440 and entered the tower frequency.  They immediately told me I had quit squawking. I have the remote 332 transponder connected to the 540 and when it went off so did the transponder.  When it booted back up I reentered the code and away I went.
Tonight at home in my hanger I decided to update the databases and install the file to unlock the SVS feature.
I was doing some setting on the replacement 540.  Setting up the data blocks the way I like them. I also entered some common routes into the FMS.  As I was doing this I decided to see if I could save the fix for the "Priddis Route" as it is known around the Calgary Bravo into Springbank airport.
I loaded the route from the FMS and then went to the map page.  I zoomed the map and then rubberbanded the line to "Priddis Corner" within in 2 seconds of removing my finger the screen went blank and the IFD rebooted. WTH I thought.
I decided to see what the 440 would do.  I loaded the same route and did the same rubber band.  A soon as I took my finger off the screen it went blank and rebooted too. I tried several different routes that I fly regularly and it is the same on both the 540 and 440.  As soon as I move the magenta line and move it and remove my finger the IFD shuts down and reboots.  Kind of scary done and IFR flight with this going on.
Anyone in Avidyne Live land experienced this issue?
Latest software installed in the 440 by my shop.  The replacement 540 came with the latest software.

Definitely no bueno that you're having this problem.  However, I think it's a "good thing" that it's repeatable--hopefully that will make it easy for Avidyne to troubleshoot and resolve.

Sounds like a heads-up to everyone to not attempt rubber-banding with 10.2.3.1. :-(

Cam, can you take video of it happening and send it to me?  I was doing rubber banding just yesterday and it worked just fine for me.  If you have two IFDs, take video of both as the event occurs.

Dieselcam and AVI tech personnel,
IFD 440 exhibiting the same overall result while ammending waypoints at FPL page and pressing inner knob, lower right - without using rubber band feature.
Otherwise flawless IFD 440 operations for 1.5 years. 
Sequence of actions: 2.7 hours into IFR flight WJF to CCR -> ATC ammends route-> I ammended route accordingly from FPL page-> inserted waypoint using only lower right knob-> pressed inner knob, lower right.....

Result/symptom:
IFD440 screen went completely blank upon pressing inner knob, lower right -> The Avidyne logo was faintly visible (could have been burn in ghost image) -> ifd 440 radio still working/talking to ATC-> IFD then displayed '...Loading Database' (or possibly '... Loading NAV database', not sure was busy flying ifr)-> IFD 440 map screen reappeared without my flight plan activated and without the ammendment I attempted to enter....

This was repeatable 3x - two unintentional and one intentional to verify the problem. First episode as described. Second episode 10 minutes into the return flight. Third episode to verify repeatability 45 minutes into return flight.

Failure theories for response from User's/AVI experts:
1) Hardware failure related to inner knob lower right?
2) Max number of waypoints/ flight plans in IFD?
3) Strange database boundary between NorCal/Socal causing the GPS reboot/'...Loading Database' issue in flight?

Please offer advice/help. I have become fond of the ifd 440, but was horrified when the screen went blank while navigating on an IFR flight plan with my family onboard.

That's not enough to go on.  Best to call tech support and open a ticket so we can track it.  First thing they'll do is ask for logs, so if you can get those before calling, it will expedite the process.  Especially need the event log and the date/time of the event.  If you can recall the exact contents of the flight plan and the exact amendment you were attempting to enter, that would be helpful as well.

There is other weirdness in the logs now that I look, but one issue at a time.  I would be interested in knowing if you/ AVI have seen anything like this.  Could this be caused by a glitch in the latest NAV Data?  Otherwise, nothing else has changed with my system since the GPS rollover update to SW ver 10.2.1.0.A (I do not need and do not want the update after that).  Further, everything has been fine for several months after the 10.2.1.0.A update.

128 Waypoints and 100 stored routes.  No need to post log extracts here, we'll handle it through tech support.

Thanks Avi Steve. If 128 is the total number of waypoints for all routes, I was there with approximately 30 total routes stored. What happens to the IFD 440 if 128 waypoints are stored and route editing is performed in flight?

No, it's 128 waypoints in a route.  The flight plan can have 128, route 1 can have 128, route 2 can have 128, etc.  I'm not yet sure what the cause of your problem is, but it's not a lack of capacity.

I don't remember about Dieselcam's specific situation, so he'll have to comment.  In general, we found an issue with rubberbanding in a two box installation when cross-sync was enabled and the boxes had different databases.  That's fixed in 10.2.4.1.

The purpose of this reply is to recap the spontaneous reboot issue for my IFD440. Avidyne returned the unit after replacing the 'CF' and 'SD' cards  with the unit  under two year warranty, but charged $750 for the 'no fault' found service. The dealer then added 10% plus shipping to that. Now $900+ dollars short, I still have no confidence in the IFD440 and I am certain I will neither buy another Avidyne product, nor recommend Avidyne to anyone else. On a positive note, all of the people I spoke with at Avidyne for this issue were solid characters who were sincerely interested in doing the right thing.

Hmmm......I find it troubling that repairs were made (replacing the 'CF' and 'SD' cards) and you get charged a no fault service fee.  Also, even if Avidyne was unable to find a fault, do your logs not show something amiss?
