I tried searching the forum for this, and came up blank.  I'm sure there's a simple explanation for this.  Every time I update the databased on my IFD440, it seems to save a few files onto my USB drive named BK171116.002, .003, .004, etc...

My IFD540 doesn't behave like this.  I'm curious what the discrepancy is, and whether I should be doing anything with these files.  Thanks!

They are various user data backup files, I believe as follows:
BKyymmdd.001 settings
BKyymmdd.002 waypoints
BKyymmdd.003 routes
BKyymmdd.004 checklists
If a 2nd or 3rd backup is made on the same day, the file extension is incremented as follows .012, .022, etc)

I'm not 100% certain about .001 and .004 (could be reversed) but .002 and .003 are definitely waypoints and routes respectively.

Normally they are created via the maintenance menu following the user data backup/restoration procedure described on pp 6-42+ in the pilot's guide (P/N 600-00300-001 Rev 04). Not sure why you're getting these without having specifically checked them for backup at some point.

Further comments, Jimmy:

The 540 and 440 work exactly the same in this respect.

When you power them on with an attached usb stick, the 540 and 440 come up ready to update showing the following list of actions, assuming that you only have a single new navdata update on your usb stick:
1) the usb navdata update cycle with a check mark against it indicating that it is selected for action
2) a save checklists action (without check mark)
3) a save settings action (without check mark)
4) a save waypoints action (without check mark)
5) a save routes action (without check mark)

There are 3 soft buttons on the left:
Select All
Unselect All
Proceed

If you click immediately on Proceed, you should only update the navdata because that is the only action selected. If you got any of the BKyymmdd.xxx files written to your usb, then they must have been manually selected by you (intentionally or not). If you didn't manually select them (placing a check mark against them on the right), then I suspect that you accidentally touched the Select All button before the Proceed button when updating the IFD440 (but not when updating the IFD540).

The file extensions changed at 10.2 software, so prior to that it was:

- download CHECKLISTS generates a file BKyymmdd.0x0
- download  SETTINGS  generates a file BKyymmdd.0x1
- download WAYPOINTS  generates a file BKyymmdd.0x2
- download   ROUTES   generates a file BKyymmdd.0x3

After 10.2 the formats are as follows:

CHECKLISTS generates a file BKyymmdd.xx0
CONFIG     generates a file BKyymmdd.xx1
WAYPOINTS  generates a file BKyymmdd.xx2
ROUTES     generates a file BKyymmdd.xx3
SETTINGS   generates a file BKyymmdd.xx4
