If a person owns 2 planes and each has an IFD540 in them, can he use one data subscription and update the airplanes every other month. IE; airplane A gets a January update and then airplane B gets the February update? Currently have a neighbor who moves his nav/com back and forth between 2 airplanes and this is a consideration in getting a 2nd dedicated nav/com.

Not identical, but my Bonanza has dual IFD540s. I use a single navdata subscription and update both with the same stick.

Only issue on that I see is the Jeppesen data subscription is allocated to my tail number, so I don’t know if that would be a show stopper.

use a software utility called imageUSB to copy your usb stick for the second device
