I had an odd situation just last week. I filed and was cleared for KEAU > BAE > CGT > TOL > DJB > KCGF, which I'd planned out with ForeFlight. Trying to enter TOL in the IFD550 only brought up a bunch of 5-letter waypoints starting with TOL, but no way I could find to enter TOL (tol space, for example). I took off with the "gap" in cleared and entered flight plan, and once in Chicago Center airspace asked them if I should overfly KTOL or what, and they cleared me from CGT > DJB then direct destination. I've rechecked the Jeppesen Notices & Alerts, but there's no mention of this, so now I'm wondering if this is an IFD issue.

I forgot to mention: this is with both the IFD550 and IFD440 running 10.2.6.1

Another user on the Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association forum posted this earlier today:

"Rob Resnik: COPA Member

I was loading my flight plan from I69 (Sporty’s) to KSUS (Spirit outside St. Louis).DB current.

I was given a VOR waypoint TOY (Troy) but neither the 540 or the 440 would pull it up with the correct spelling. It populated a 5 letter intersection after the “Y” was input .

I think it was “TOYER”

Has anyone encountered something like this and is there anything you can do about it other than requesting an alternative near the route from ATC-which worked for today."

So…

My question: does the IFD have an issue with waypoints starting with "TO", similar to the issue pre-10.2.6.1 with squawk codes starting with 0 (zero)?

I think it was a coincidence that both of these scenarios involved navaid identifiers that start with "TO". In the case of TOL, it appears that that navaid is now a low altitude TACAN only navaid and that type of navaid may not be in the navigation database.

There are many VOR's that have shut down recently, those that had corresponding DME stations (not TACAN) that are still operational appear to be in the database (CGI is a good example). Thursday, the Marion IL, VOR (MWA) is going away; however, the MWA low altitude DME station is being retained and is in the new IFD database effective Thursday.

In the case of Troy, IL VOR (TOY), it is in the IFD database. When I try to insert it into a sample proposed IFD routing, geofill suggests TOYUL intersection when I enter TOY. If I enter TOY and press the CLR button when the cursor is on the "U" of the suggested TOYUL waypoint, then the TOYUL is replaced with the TOY VORTAC and is ready to be entered into the route. This seems to be a function of the IFD's geofill logic.

Thanks Darren. That makes sense, and I'm not sure I tried CLR after entering TOL. I won't be back at the plane 'till Friday, and I'll try it then. I now know to watch out for the navaid type more than I have been. I'll pass your answer on to the other Cirrus pilot.

TOL is currently a low altitude TACAN only navaid; as far as I can tell, that type of navaid is not in the IFD database.

It is correct that the IFD database doesn't contain TACAN stations unless they are required by a procedure that is included in the database.
