I understand that the IFD540s will not crossfill with the GNS530s, this is not the subject of this question.

The question is -- we have our GNS sending/updating its active flight plan to a dock-mounted Garmin 796. This is a simple serial input produced by the GNS, and input into the 796, using the "aviation in" format I believe.

This is a pretty common setup. Is this supported by the IFD540?

Yes, that interface is completely supported by the IFD540/440.   In fact, I use it every day in the Avidyne test airplane where I have some external devices on the glareshield that take data like flight plan routing in via the Aviation 232 protocol.

As part of the Plug and Play nature of the IFD series of products, we've tried to ensure that every device and protocol that the GNS units supported is also supported by the IFD.   HTAWS so far is the only known exception.

OK, good to hear, I thought I had read about the Aera type units somewhere but could not find that explicitly in the FAQ.

I expect that there is full compatibility with JPI 830 fuel flow & distance to destination type data back/forth on 232 as well, and ASPEN on 429 & 232.

And, Insight Avionics GEM G3 fuel flow?

Insight uses the same Shadin format on 232, so it should work as well. (not official answer)

Well we're not explicitly calling out support for the Insight GEM G3 since it wasn't explicitly called out by the GNS530.   I haven't looked at the G3 Interface Control Document or equivalent so I'm not sure what data it's expecting to send or receive but as Orest notes, those standard 232 protocols are supported by the IFD540.

Insight's G3 is working on my G 530.
BTW It was nice to see the 540 in action at AOPA's summit in Ft.Worth

In other words fuel flow from the G3 is showing up on the 530? If so, can you send me a copy of how your 232 Configuration is set up on the 530? I can provide instructions on how to find that if needed.

Steve,

I've sent you several relevant Insight Avionics documents via private message.

As I understand, RS232, which the G3 and GNS 530W use, is an electrical standard.  I wonder whether the data formats supported by each instrument are compatible so that the system does work.

Insight's G3 is working on my G 530.

That's good news.  If the IFD540 fully implements GNS 530W functions, then I would expect the fuel flow to display on the IFD540 too.  I hope Steve can verify that.

Thanks.
