Suggested rephrasing ...

Original:

The only waypoints that do not permit vertical constraints are:
  Origin
  Destination, provided there is an approach loaded for it
  Missed Approach Point
  Altitude Terminated Legs

Suggested change:

The only waypoints that do not permit vertical constraints are:
  Origin
  Destination, if it has an approach selected
  Missed Approach Point
  Altitude Terminated Legs

Good Morning Orest,

Are you suggesting that we who fly mostly VFR are not supposed to use the IFD540?

I have been flying for 68 years and have accumulated in the vicinity of 38,500 hours, but at least ninety percent of my current flying is VFR with NO flight plan filed. I want the capability of shooting a WAAS approach if it fits my fancy, but most of the time, I just start the engine and go fly.

When something pops up, the drill for me is to go direct to wherever I wish to enter into the IFR system and that will most commonly be some point close to where the approach will be initiated.

I am VERY interested in how to go direct to some segment of an approach easily and quickly without the need for loading a full flight plan first.

The KISS system works great for me. Please no not denigrate we VFR flyers!

Happy Skies,

Old Bob

Old Bob,

I have no idea why you are saying that. Please explain.

Any kind of flying is GREAT, from Cubs at 500 ft AGL with the wind in your hair, to Jets in the flight levels.

I'll raise my hand here and say Bob, that was my comment in the operational no dups allowed thread, not Orest.

Bob, did you get an answer to your question, which appeared to be "How do I set an approach when no flight plan is filed?"?

If not, it appears that you need to at least input a destination, either via "Nearest" or type in a Direct To.  Once you have that, just select the desired approach and activate it.  You can then highlight the desired waypoint from which you want to initiate the approach and use the "Direct to" again.

Good Afternoon PHKMN,

If you felt that I was asking a question, I am sorry I did not phrase my comment well.

I thought someone was saying that we who normally fly with no flight plan being filed were doing something wrong. <G>

In any case, I appreciate your concern.  I am confident I will be able to initiate a clearance when one is needed.

Thank you for your thought.

Happy Skies,

Old Bob

Now, if I can just get it installed before Oshkosh!
