If I replace my Garmin 430W with the IFD540, will I be able to remove my VOR head in the panel?

I think FORANE is probably right but just to be sure,

1.  The IFD540 does not display a bearing pointer on it anywhere.
2.  The CDI datablock that the IFD540 can display is GPS-based only.
3.  Do you have any other VOR course indicator (e.g. Aspen EFD1000) anywhere in the cockpit?

Depending on the answer to #3 and how you currently use your VOR indicator, it's either a yes or no.  But based on what you implied in the original question, I suspect the answer is a strong No.

Yes, I do have the Aspen 1000 Pro.

Then I think you can remove your VOR head. With the IFD540-EFD1000 combo, you have all the means you need to control and display VOR data.
