Fast forward 5, 10, 15 years when the G1000, EX5000, etc. integrated panels are at end of life from the manufacturer. What do you do with your 172S w/ G1000? Answer, you will have to upgrade it, but to what? There will need to be an STC to install something else, but what? and from whom? Well, for the high number production models like 172, SR22, there may be an upgrade from the manufacturer. For others, it will require a 3rd party STC from some business who has a) determined there is a business case for investment, b) gone through the STC process, and c) actually ships and installs these upgrades.

My fear is that with the much fewer number produced airframes, there may be no option and therefore, the airframe becomes junk.

We will have to wait and see what happens, but even if you can upgrade your G1000 172, are you going to spend $50-$100k in a complete upgrade/replacement of the integrated panel IN ONE SHOT?

Any update on the 8.2 approval from Cirrus? The last time I called Tech support I was informed that they are working with Cirrus for the approval.

I need to send my EX 500 into Duncan for some repairs and software upgrade but don't want to send the unit to Duncan until I know that they can do the 8.2 software upgrade. Can anyone tell me when this new software will be released.

I asked Avidyne at Oshkosh 2 days ago. Same response. 8.2 is done and we're just waiting on Cirrus to approve it. Should only be a few weeks. Ugh! Same song, 15th verse.

OK, we've managed to find a way to get around the TC issues.  Here's a statement from the service  bulletin:

This service bulletin describes the installation of software, which has been developed with a DO-178B level D compliant process. Avidyne has assessed this update to be a minor alteration allowing performance of this service bulletin by appropriately rated repairman/repair station with a logbook entry.

Bottom line is that you can get this done now without going to Cirrus.  Call or write to sales to get all of the details.  sales@avidyne.com or 800-AVIDYNE.

Steve, can you confirm the under 8.2 that ADS-B traffic and weather, received from a Garmin 345, will correctly display? I’m happy to test this if it hasn’t already been tested, but I don’t want to purchase it until I know that it will work in my configuration.

Since it's a minor alteration, aircraft type is not a factor.  The service bulletin applies to MFDs with part numbers 700-00004-XXX or 700-00030-X0X.

There are factors to consider before upgrading.  8.2 does not support MLX770 or WSI Inflight Datalink.  Also, we recommend that if you have a Garmin 4xx/5xx connected via 232, that you switch to a 429 connection (but not mandatory).  Details are in the service bulletin, you should contact sales and/or tech support to get the details.

Confirmed.  Wx will come over 232.  Traffic over 429.

Steve -  I have an L3 Lynx NGT9000+ that already displays traffic (TAS and ADS-B merged) on my MFD with v8.1.  And I would like to keep XM weather displayed on the MFD as well, and would not want to replace it with ADS-B weather.  So for me, those enhanced v8.2 capabilities are not really beneficial.  Would an upgrade to v8.2 provide my MFD any other benefits or improvements over 8.1, other than ADS-B weather and traffic?

+1!   Anyone tried 8.2 yet?

I was wondering if, with 8.2, its possible to choose (I assume via the configuration of the MFD) whether you continue to receive and display XM weather with 8.2 or, instead pull weather and traffic from your Skytrax?

Can you possibly configure the MFD to take weather from XM but traffic (only...) from the Skytrax?

Thanks!!

Here's the official press release regarding 8.2 and ADS-B support.  Being insiders, you guys knew about this long ago so it's not necessarily news.  A list of FAQs has also been published.

FYI, for EX500/600, the software is actually referred to as release 4.2 and has it's own list of FAQs.

Update on 8.2, it seems it is suspended until some bugs are fixed!

From
"Avidyne Tech Support"<techsupport@avidyne.com>
Good Afternoon,
The 8.2 software update is very new. When it was sent out to a few people there was a glitch found in the software. Avidyne is currently working on the software to fix all problems and that is why it is temporarily suspended. At this moment we do not know when the update will be released again but fingers crossed it will be next week.

Sorry for all the confusion!

I looked into this late Friday after Ibraham's post.  Turns out that when a large volume of weather data is received over ADS-B, the map can become disabled and the tab will turn yellow.  A SIL has now been published regarding the situation.

Engineering is already looking into the situation, so hopefully a solution will be available very soon.

AviSteve stated, "While release 8.2 will display ADS-B traffic, it will continue to display the old style traffic icons.  That's because the MFD is a level D box and the TSO requires level C in order to display the new symbology."

I'm unsure precisely what is covered by "old style traffic icons" and "new symbology." And, I'm considering installation of an L3 NGT-9000, or a GTX345 in order to display TIS-B (and FIS-B) on my R8.2 EX5000.

To anyone on the Forum with an EX5000 and either of those two ADS-B units, I'd appreciate if you could post a picture of the display of an ADS-B OUT target on your EX5000.

Thanks.

The MFD Pilot Guide shows the traffic icons it displays in Table 3.1 in Chapter 3.  If you don't have that available, traffic within Skywatch's or the Lynx's alert zone is a yellow circle, with altitude differential information and rate of climb/descent if the target is broadcasting altitude.  Other targets are cyan diamonds - solid if closer, hollow if not.  They will also show altitude and rate info, if the target has Mode C or ADS-B.

Catani, thanks for the point-out. Table 3.1 answers my question.

I'm pleased to see that ADS-B traffic will have a velocity vector associated, even if with only 45-deg resolution. Of course, I'll get the full ADS-B symbology on my iPad.

I think whether you get the velocity vector depends upon the box that is feeding the MFD (according to that table).  I have a Lynx NGT 9000+, yet I get no velocity vectors for targets on my MFD.   Of course, I do get the enhanced ADS-B traffic icons on the Lynx traffic screen itself, as well as via wifi on ForeFlight.

No, 8.1  - the version compatible with Skywatch inputs.  But that pilot guide was written for 8.1, so there are apparently some traffic boxes that can provide an 8.1 MFD with vectors, I'm just not aware of which ones.

Since the Lynx cannot get the 8.1 MFD to display vector info, I'm not sure it would do so with 8.2 either.  And I'll never know since I want to keep XM weather on the MFD, and the Lynx's ability to give my MFD merged TAS/ADS-B traffic makes that a satisfactory decision for me.

I have ADS-B weather displayed in other places, so leaving XM on the MFD gives me some redundancy in weather data.  I also use the Lynx's own traffic display and my #2 GPS (set to closer ranges), for vector information for closer targets.  The distant targets displayed on my MFD are just for advance "heads up" info that tells me if I'm headed for an area with a lot of airplanes near the altitudes I will be flying when I get closer.  With my traffic display setup, I really don't need vectors on the MFD for that.

Obviously it's all a matter of personal preference.  The fact these discussions might help somebody make a purchase decision with more info is why I'm posting about it.

Hello Steve,

I see some documentation online  for Release 8.2.1, is that the fix for the 8.2 issues and is it available now?

https://techsupport.avidyne.com/portal/kb/articles/ex5000-mfd-software-8-2-faq-s

EX5000 MFD Software 8.2 FAQ's
For Entegra EX5000-equipped aircraft: (including Cirrus, Piper , Columbia, and Alliant aircraft)
•For ADS-B OUT
-Avidyne offers IFD4XX/IFD5XX FMS/GPS navigators as an approved GPS position source
-AXP340 Panel-mounted or AXP322 Remote-mounted Mode S Transponder

•For ADS-B IN
-EX5000 MFD customers can now upgrade to R8.2 MFD software
-R8.2 adds display capability of FIS-B Weather using Capstone-standard ADS-B IN protocol and ADS-B/ADS-R/TIS-B Traffic using ARINC735 protocol.
-Avidyne offers SkyTrax100 Series ADS-B IN Receiver
-R8.2 also adds compatibility with 3rd-party systems including Lynx NGT-9000, Garmin GTX345, FreeFlight RANGR-RX, or other Capstone/735-compatible ADS-B IN receivers.

Q: What's Included in R8.2?
•Adds support for Avidyne ADS-B IN weather products on EX5000 Series MFDs
-Supported ADS-B/Wx products include NEXRAD, SIGMETs, AIRMETs, winds and temps aloft, METARs, and TAFs, plus TFRs
•Allows EX5000 MFD to display ADS-B Traffic when wired to a compatible ADS-B receiver that provides traffic via ARINC 429 /735 protocol
-MFD will display legacy TAS symbols, not ADS-B directional traffic
•For Cirrus Tornado Alley Turbo owners, R8.2 also provides support for fuel flow up to 40 gph for the fuel totalizer
•R8.2 is specifically for the support of ADS-B and is not required or recommended for any other reason.

Q: What's removed in R8.2?
•R8.2 removes support for Sirius weather from the MLB700
•R8.2 removes support for Iridium-based satellite weather from the MLX770
•If you are currently using either of these systems and want to continue to do so, do not upgrade to R8.2 as you will not be able to go back.
(Note: support for XMD-076/A is NOT removed)

Q: Can I use a 3rd Party ADS-B Receiver (GTX345, L3 NGT9000 Lynx, etc) with R8.2?
•A: Yes. In addition to adding compatibility with the Avidyne SkyTrax 100 Series ADS-B receiver, R8.2 will allow your EX5000 MFD to display the same weather products from a GTX345, Lynx NGT-9000, Free Flight RANGR-RX, or other Capstone-compatible ADS-B IN Receivers.

Q: I currently have a TAS6XX series traffic system, can I still use my TAS AND get ADS-B In traffic?
•A: Yes! Avidyne’s new SkyTrax600 (aka TAS-A Release 2) allows TAS6XX series customers to upgrade to SkyTrax600 capability which blends Active-surveillance (TAS) traffic combined with passive (ADS-B IN) traffic for display on your EX-series MFD

Q: I currently have a SkyWatch TAS, can I still use the TAS AND get ADS-B In traffic?
•A: Customers will need to choose between SkyWatch TAS and ADS-B traffic on the MFD in Maintenance Mode. This is not selectable by the pilot. Some customers are displaying ADS-B Traffic on their GPS display and keeping their SkyWatch displayed on the MFD (or vice versa). For now Avidyne recommends keeping your SkyWatch TAS for traffic as most aircraft are not ADS-B out equipped yet. There are some ADS-B IN/OUT transponders that accept Skywatch/TAS input and blend it with ADS-B traffic on the ARINC 429 output, in which case the EX MFD would display both.

Q: I currently have an XMD-076 XM receiver in my airplane. Do I need to remove it to get ADS-B weather?
•A: During configuration, you have to select one datalink weather source to the EX500/EX600 MFD from the XM receiver or from the ADS-B IN Receiver, but you cannot have both. Some customers want to remove the XM and get rid of the subscription fee associated with that service, while some other customers are choosing to leave the satellite-based XM connected to their EX-series MFD and displaying ADS-B weather on their Avidyne IFD4XX/5XX GPS Navigator display (or elsewhere). It really all depends on pilot preference.

Q: I lost my Sirius weather when it was terminated by WSI/Sirius XM, do you offer a satellite-based weather solution?
•A: No, we currently do not have a replacement for the MLB700. With the proliferation of ADS-B in the market, we have not made any specific plans to develop a replacement for the MLB700 at this time. If you prefer a satellite-based weather solution we recommend a portable receiver and an iPad as a solution. Currently, the SiriusXM SXAR1 is available from Sporty's for $399 after rebate.

Q: I already have a GTX345 in my airplane. Will R8.2 allow me to display ADS-B Traffic & Weather from the GTX345 on my MFD?
•A: Yes. This also holds true for any other compatible 3rd party ADS-B receiver (Lynx/RANGR) that is already installed.

Q: Will Avidyne feature a promotional pricing with the launch of R8.2?
•A: Yes. We are currently running a promo for customers who purchase an IFD550 with a Lynx NGT-9000 from Avidyne, we will also include the R8.2 software upgrade for free for EX5000 MFD customers.

Q: Do I need to send any hardware in to Avidyne?
•A: All EX5000 MFDs can be updated to Release 8.2 via field-loadable software on Compact Flash (CF) by an authorized Avidyne dealer. The dealer will need to use the Save & Restore utility to ensure proper MFD configuration. Refer to Service Bulletin #601-00004-107.

Q: How much does R8.2 cost?
•A: Please contact Duncan Aviation at 800-562-6377 for pricing and scheduling. Additional costs may be associated with the upgrade. R8.2 upgrade is not covered under warranty.

We recently upgraded our MFD to 8.2.1 with mixed results. The wether products came across just as advertised. We have the original MLB-100 (Navworks product). Unfortunately traffic has been disabled on the IFDs (540/440 combo) and nothing on the MFD other than the LSK key and icon. No traffic on any of our displays. There was traffic on the 540/440 combo before installation of 8.2.1. Screenshot below shows the receiver as SKY TRAX 100. The installer says that is the configuration that is coming from the installation guide. My question is there a MLB-100 setting?

Is it true the 8.2.1 was suspended due to bugs found after the implementation? If so, when will 8.2.2  be released?

8.2.1 is not currently shipping because there are still cases causing the "yellow tab" problem.  It's actively being worked, but recreating the problem has not been easy.  I don't have a firm release date yet.

Hello Steve

Was the issue still with the FIS-B as in 8.2?
Do you know of any installation with just TIS-B that had the "yellow tab" problem?

Thanks

Yes, it's still FIS-B.  I guess I can't categorically rule out TIS-B, but to my knowledge there is no TIS-B only installation that has the problem.

Any chance 8.2.2 could include “stingers” for TIS-B traffic? I really value the vector on nearby traffic, and I was pretty sure that the MFD showed these vectors for TIS Traffic from the GTX 330’s TIS-A service.

We're looking to get this fixed and out as quickly as we can, so probably don't want to increase the scope, but I will ask the question.  I'm not sure what's all involved in changing symbology - from either a technical or regulatory standpoint.

I had R8.2 installed on an Entegra EX-5000 in December 2018.  It's a complete failure.  I've had it back to the Avionics shop 4 times and they say it's the software.  No weather displays and all traffic targets are co-altitude.  Avidyne has communicated very little with me or the avionics shop.  The MFD periodically blanks and reboots or blanks and reboots to a "windows" type screen.  Meanwhile, I have not engine instrument display.  I've asked for a refund and got no response.  I want my old software back or ideally a fix.

I was told by tech support that this forum is really the only way to communicate with Avidyne.  Really?

If you don't feel you're getting satisfactory response, there's no problem escalating the issue.  Start by emailing Bryan Kahl, bkahl@avidyne.com.  I'll alert him that you'll be contacting him.

Unfortunately, I as well have fallen victim to a 8.2 install. My cirrus has been grounded for 3 months now because the MFD becomes mostly unresponsive in flight. Rebooting in flight gets it back but fuel data is corrupted when this occurs and then it fails again. I am at a complete loss. The avi shop is trying another rewire configuration for me so I can at least fly it comfortably. What a disaster.

The lack of any updates in this forum is concerning as well. Some sort of news would be helpful.

I have incorporated 8.2.1 and it works great. I have weather and traffice daimonds with altitude above or below on my MFD. I also have traffic with arrows, callsigns and traffic altitudes above or below on my IFDs.
No problems with the weather on my MFD. We have actually had 8.2.1 for about a month now with no problems.

I hope I don't regret this statement, but... Look for it in May 2019.  The problem was identified and fixed.  Software and documentation are complete, pending results of a short flight test.  After that, it's signoff and then it will be available.

Since the IFD 10.2.3.1 was completed, hopefully the MFD 8.2.2 is coming soon.
