Hi folks,

I am pondering the purchase of an IFD540, so I don't have any real-world experience with the unit. If anyone has time/patience to answer some newbie questions, I'd appreciate it.

I have been playing with the simulator and reading the beta version of the 10.2 documentation. I'm wondering if there are some differences between the simulator and the latest release in the field (other than traffic buzzing like mosquitos and headwinds that follow you - thank goodness that isn't reality) I'm assuming that since I can't find it in the documentation, that these features don't exist. I haven't found mention of these in the forums.

1) Is there a setting to turn off airspace alerts? The documentation mentions audio alerts, but I'd like to turn off the messages entirely, as they are just nuisance messages when flying an IFR clearance. This is especially true of alert areas.

2) I can show a pop-up for an airport in the map screen, but I can't then hit Direct-to to that waypoint. There isn't a short-cut?

3) It would appear that it isn't possible to create user waypoints by selecting a point on the map screen.

4) Is there any use for the top lsk key on the left hand side?

5) There is a data field called Destination ETA. I can't make any sense of the time shown. It is hours off from current time, zulu time or planned arrival time.

6) Previous legs of the flight plan disappear from the screen. Any chance of keeping those visible, or at least show breadcrumbs of route flown?

7) Can the flight log be converted to a kml file? Any chance a sample could be uploaded so I can see what it looks like?

8) I've read the posts regarding lack of Android support. Too bad. I'm another that has no interest in buying fruit.

9) How often do software updates come along? My impression from the forum is that it takes a year or more to see changes come to light. How long would a purchase made now be a candidate for a software update without charge?

10) The documentation (and the forum I believe) makes mention that some features, like orbit holds, are optional. What will the pricing be like for such add-ons, and do I have to pay the avionics shop to add it?

Thanks in advance for input.

Jeff

Welcome aboard, here is a stab at some ....

So far, all the updates have not only been free, but the shop was reimbursed for time by Avidyne. They come at irregular intervals. A major update perhaps once a year, minor updates more frequently.

10.2 will be a BIGGIE, and it is imminent. Some of the major new additions related to hardware enhancements (on screen video, etc.) have a fee attached.

The LSKs are used depending on the screen that you are on. Sometimes a key may be blank.

You can do flight plan graphical editing (touch & drag), which in effect creates a user waypoint. (PG 3-9)

Airspace alerts:  PG 4-31: AUX | SETUP| Setup FMS

Thanks you sir!

Ahhh. I know I've seen that screen before for FMS setup! Thanks. I forgot.

Rubber banding is okay for a one-off, but I can't seem to save a rubber band waypoint for future use. I guess I can just copy down the coordinates and create a new waypoint from that.

Rubber band waypoints are saved as WPnnnnnn (user waypoint), or something like that.

Orest is always spot on.  Be aware as you should glean from your perusal of the threads on this board that the word "imminent" has a relative meaning, as measured in Avidyne time.

OTOH, are there boards like this with other avionics vendors, where the good and the not-so-good get openly discussed?

Ha. Yes. I have gleaned that. I've gone back as far as about page 14 of the threads here to gather as much as I can (but perhaps not remembering everything).

Sounds like 10.2 will fix some important issues. I am wondering if I need to be in a wait and see mode before such a big purchase. I'm thinking of adding a Lynx 9000 (which apparently doesn't play well in this scenario) and an Aspen PFD 1000 in the mix too. My wife is still trying to recover from the shock. I'd like to get to the point of only needing the tablet for approach plates (I use Avare, which is a pretty slick app for the Android, and I like what it can do with kml and shp files). Still shopping around...

I see the rubber band waypoint being saved (RBXXXX I think), but as soon as I delete the route or load another, the waypoint disappears from the user waypoint list.

Turns out, you can do item #2 from the Nearest tab of the FMS screen. The only caveat is that if your airport lies inside airspace, the airspace takes precedence and you can't select the airport. Trying to select KSUU will open a 2 page pop-up for the alert area and the class D, but not the airport.

In my mind, it really is Federal Time or FAA Time (not Avidyne time).

I completely agree with the frustration, but let's point it in the right direction.

Other companies appear to avoid this problem only because they do not invite their customers to participate in the product development process.  So the customers never experience the lengthy, horrible, and frustrating certification process first-hand.

Agreed.

Yup, and Yup.   We'll get there when the FAA decides, no sooner.  Avidyne's influence does not extend beyond acting upon what they see in the crystal ball.

If we want something different, our congress-critters need to be convinced there needs to be accountability outside of the executive branch.   Say a Board of Governors represented by user organizations...

Playing with the sim some more, and I notice that I am still getting alerts for controlled airspace even though I have the alert setting set to off. Is this just a sim software thing?

Can someone please post a flight log file? I'm very interested in the fornat to see if it can be represented as a kml file.

AviJake, any possibility of getting the breadcrumb feature?

BTW, as you all know probably better than I that there are some really cool features with the IFD. I'm leaning this way over the other choices thus far.

I've had a flight log sent to me privately, so I've been able to take a look at one. I am a little disappointed to find out that GPS altitude is not included in 2_FLIGHT.CSV. I see pressure altitude, which can vary with conditions. Seems like this would be an easy field to add to this log file. Can this be done please?
