I'm still relatively green at instrument flying, so I haven't flown many SIDs and STARs. I did however get a clearance the other day that I could not figure out how to program into my IFD540. I'm curious how everyone else would have handled this, or if possibly there's a bug in the IFD STAR code.
The clearance was: KIAD CPTAL9 CSN V140 MOL SBV SBV4 KTTA It's all pretty straightforward, except SBV is not a published transition for the SBV4 arrival. It is however the fix where all of the published transitions meet, and is the fix the procedure is named after (SBV.SBV4). So when you try to load the arrival into the IFD it asks for a transition and the only options are GVE, PSK, and ROA, none of which are along my cleared route. I was hoping I could just pick one of those transitions and then remove the transition fix, essentially starting the STAR at SBV, but the IFD does not allow that. I checked on the Garmin GTN, and it will allow you to do just that. What would be the correct way to load the FPL for this clearance and fly it? It seems like I'd have to load an incorrect STAR transition, and then remember to manually go Direct To SBV when necessary to skip sequencing to GVE for example. Thoughts?

I to do not have a lot of experience with STARS and SID, but I tried the same clearance on the IFD simulator.
The way it worked out, I entered the flight as cleared (the SIM has CPTAL8 SID) KIAD CPTAL8 CSN V140 MOL SBV KTTA ,selected the SBV4 arrival with the ROA transition (just to have it in the FMS) Once on the leg between MOL and SBV, go to - FMS, Expanded View, select SBV in the STAR and select direct to. The ROA waypoint gets deleted automatically and the STAR will sequence starting at SBV I am not sure if there is another way, but it seemed to work on the simulator, hopefully it will on the installed unit. |

That's basically what I've been thinking is the workaround as well. It seems like a bug though, since you should be able to load an arrival without being forced to specify a transition.

I don't understand why the IFD insists on selecting a transition instead of allowing a termination at the last common waypoint, either. My old 430 did the same thing. Since 9 times out of 10 I get departure clearances like the one you describe, this is a constant annoyance for me that seems completely unnecessary.
