After doing the swap from a GNS 430W to the IFD440,
there is no output to my KN64 DME. It is on a toggle switch with my IFD540 which works normally. Every possible configuration change I could come up with made no difference. My avionics shop is now working on it. They replaced the IFD with another GNS430W which outputs DME normally. They then plugged the IFD440 into the IFD540 rack and no DME output. I had previously sent the logs to Avidyne which showed normal DME function. After some phone consultation with Avidyne tech support, my avionics shop sent in the IFD440 to Avidyne and it came back with a report "no defects found". They reinstalled it and still no DME output to the KN64. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Bob

I assume it has been verified (probably several times) that the DME Channel Mode on the VOR / LOC / GS CDI maintenance page is set to "King Serial".

Yes, tried that on more than one occasion.
I tried many different configurations on the IFD440, including exactly matching the IFD540 configuration (which works with the KN64). It was a bit tedious as I don't have a VOR on the field, so after every configuration change I had to fly to a field with a VOR/DME to test. That's one of the reasons I turned it over to my avionics shop. I'm wondering if there could be a pin missing in the connector....I'm guessing that Avidyne did a software/hardware check on it, not necessarily plugging it into an actual DME unit. Bob

if you plug a Garmin 430W back in the tray does it work?
Does the IFD 440 work in a different airplane ? Is the NAV1 - NAV2 selector switch working? Pin 22 on both IFDs should go through the switch to pin C on the KN64. Check the continuity of the wiring.

yes, the avionics shop plugged another 430W back in and it worked normally,
verifying the wiring from the tray to the KN64 to be all intact and functioning. I'd like to be able to swap another IFD440 in place, but know of no other ones around here. My shop plugged the 440 into the 540 tray (which provides normal functioning DME to the KN64) and it did not work (dme function) otherwise the 440 works just fine.

After extensive bench testing on the oscilloscope, FargoJet found the
IFD440 wasn't putting out the correct pulses to drive the KN64. Avidyne sent me a new unit and it worked perfectly when installed. Bob |
