Question on departure procedures that start with “climb to, then turn (or join)”…. It’ll show a “Manual Sequence”.  No problem entering and/or loading the departure, but when flying it, what’s the best way to sequence to the next leg?  I’ve been going to the FMS page, selecting the next leg, hitting Direct, then back to the map page.  That’s a lot of button pushes… there must be a better way?

When the active leg (heading/course to altitude leg with no baro-altitude input to the IFD) triggers the "Manual Sequence Req'd" caution, there should be a "Sequence Leg" LSK FMS hook on the FMS - FPL tab of the panel mount IFD as well as the IFD100. Selecting the "Sequence Leg" LSK FMS hook at the appropriate barometric altitude sequences the IFD flight plan to the next leg with a single button push / screen tap.

Should I be able to see that work on the simulator (10.3)?  I’m not seeing it.  Using KAVL and the AVL7 departure as a test case.  Not seeing any “Sequence Leg” LSK, in either map or fms mode.  What could I be doing wrong?  Didn’t see it in an actual departure there either (IFD 540).

You will not have the "Manual Sequence Req'd" caution or "Sequence Leg" LSK FMS hook in the IFD Trainer because the IFD Trainer replicates an IFD that has a baro-altitude input. If the IFD has a baro-altitude input, the IFD automatically sequences the legs at the proper barometric altitude.

Using the KAVL departure example, on the sim, with a waypoint (SUG) entered after the departure, I DO have “Manual termination” listed on the FMS page.  And if I just let it run after takeoff, the sim doesn’t turn on course, just keeps going indefinitely. I’m using “Follow FPL” on Flight Control… in that mode, would the sim be climbing, and know when it hit the altitude to turn?

"Manual Termination" is different than "Manual Sequence Req'd". 

The "Manual Sequence Req'd" caution and corresponding "Sequence Leg" FMS - FPL LSK FMS hook are used for heading/course to altitude legs when the IFD does not know its baro-corrected altitude due to the IFD not having a baro-altitude input. In other words, the pilot needs to tell the IFD when that altitude condition is met.

Manual Termination legs are heading/course legs with no defined endpoint. With a Manual Termination leg, the IFD needs to be instructed when to proceed to another waypoint.

Looking at the AVL7 departure from either runway 17 or 35, the depature is coded in either direction to climb (runway heading) until a barometric altitude of 2570 (400 AGL) then continue runway heading until the IFD is manually instructed to do something else.

In an airplane without a baro-altitude input to the IFD, on the AVL7 there would first be a "Manual Sequence Req'd" caution with a "Sequence Leg" LSK on the FMS - FPL tab on departure due to the initial heading to altitude leg. If the "Sequence Leg" LSK is used to sequence the leg, the IFD would then transition to the Manual Termination leg which is also runway heading in this case until the IFD is instructed to do something else (i.e. direct to another route waypoint).

When you simulate the AVL7 departure on the IFD Trainer, the simulated IFD automatically transitions from the initial heading to altitude departure leg to the Manual Termination leg at a simulated altitude of 2570 because the IFD Trainer simulates an IFD with a baro-altitude input. On the IFD Trainer, there will not be a "Manual Sequence Req'd" caution or a "Sequence Leg" LSK on the FMS - FPL tab because the transition is automatic. Just as with an IFD without a baro-altititude input, the Manual Termination leg will require a manual input to sequence to a waypoint beyond the Manual Termination leg.
