Thought I'd start a thread to compare what folks have done with their datablock setups. Of course some folks are blessed with two IFD540s, so more room for customization. v10.1 will widen the possbilities as well.
In any case here is my current one, twiddled a bit since I first got it set up ... What is YOUR setup? Even if you are still at the simulator stage, post away your ideas. * Orest |

If you have an Aspen why do you have OAT on the IFD?

The OAT on the IFD, is from the engine analyzer. Two different sources of OAT, just in case. And the analyzer itself has fewer display slots to play with.
I have still another external OAT probe, that used to supply the GTX330, left it in when I pulled it. One day it may be connected to the IFD540 primarily.

Is there a way to get ETE to display seconds? When flying an approach I always liked having the seconds displayed on my 530. When flying non precision approaches with the 540 I have felt lost when trying to track my descent rate. The difference between 2 min from a fix and 2 min 59 sec, effects the need to increase or reduce your rate of descent.

And, don't forget, the 540 will show you your VSR automatically, to achieve both the FAF and MDA on an NPA. Note that the VSR is NOT active inside the FAF on a precision approach. * Orest Edited by oskrypuch - 08 Jan 2015 at 10:20pm |

Orest, Here is mine which was posted on one of the very initial threads.
The top box is track up and used for tactical where am I going The bottom box is North up and used for situational awareness and data entry.

Two units sure does give you a LOT of real estate indeed.
Curious about the lat/long block, do you use that much, or just needed something to put in? * Orest |

I would have liked to put the active approach, or nearest datablock, but they both required 3 lines and I only had 2 left over. The Lat/long seemed like it might be good in an emergency to be able to report exact position. But, I guess ADS-B does that too automatically.
I may swap it with ETA at destination, or fuel time remaining which would be more useful.

Is everyones VSR data block working? Had a descent setup with TOD and bottom of descent altitude displayed but no VSR during the descent. Am I missing something in setup?

Have you EVER seen a value in the VSR block? If not, may be a setup issue, or you may not have a BARO ALT input. The latter will be addressed in 10.0.3 I believe. If you have, sometimes the VSR won't display. It may have to do with it being suppressed for operational reasons, like too near a waypoint with a restrction or something like that. * Orest |

I haven't seen anything in that block either. I do have an Aspen but am not sure it is correctly hooked up to provide BARO ALT or other "air data" type of information - is there a way I could check that?

I was thinking I might not have a BARO ALT but if that was the case how would the 540 compute a TOD with only the bottom of descent altitude? For what it is worth I have a Aspen feeding the 540. Before the 540 had a 530 and it did compute descent rate. So assuming it was getting a BARO. Is there a software glitch somewhere?

The 540 uses GPS ALT to calculate TOD, if no BARO ALT available. The ASPEN's ACU (original unit) will NOT forward BARO ALT, even though the PFD puts it on the bus. You need the optional ACU2 unit to get the BARO ALT value passed along. Bypassing the ACU altogether will also work, but is not a supported setup for the STC. But, not to worry, 10.0.3 (availability imminent) changes that, so the 540 will use GPS ALT for the VSR calc as well, if no BARO ALT is available. (Edit: it will be 10.1 that will bring in this function) * Orest Edited by oskrypuch - 21 Jan 2015 at 2:10pm |

VSR If 10.0.3 doesn't provide this there may be a new 540 on the market.Seemed so simple!!

A populated VSR currently requires baro input as described in the pilot guide and in Orest's post above. As of Rel 10.1, that datablock will always populate no matter what since it will use baro input if available and GPS altitude if not. |

Where is it in the settings to get the VSR? I was having to use the G496 feature.

OK, form what I am getting is that currently the 540 requires a BaroAlt for VSR which the Aspen provides but the 540 won't except. After rev 10.1 in March/April time frame the 540 will default to GPS ALT if no Baro and the VSR will then function. Correct?

Not quite. If the ASPEN provided the BARO ALT (you need an ACU2 to do that), then the 540 will happily use it. That is my situation. But, if you don't have the optional ASPEN ACU2, then the ASPEN fails to provide that information ot the 540. In that case, you will see TOD displayed only, but not VSR. Once firmware 10.1 is released, the 540 will fall back to GPS ALT even for the VSR field, if there is no BARO ALT provided. * Orest |

The VSR is one of the configurable datablock fields. You can define it to display wherever you like. I put it below my three decker frequency and Nav Mode boxes ... * Orest Edited by oskrypuch - 21 Jan 2015 at 5:40pm |

Yep, the navdata & obstacles is available almost instantly. The chart data has to be collated for your specific subscription, takes some "manual" handling, and as such can take some hours to appear. The sales guy mentioned that to me, when I asked. * Orest |
